This exhibition marks an exciting milestone for Stuart, following his Judge’s Choice Award win at the Brewery Arts Open last spring. Since then, we’ve been proud to support him in the studio as he has developed this ambitious and distinctive body of work.
About the artist
Stuart Irving (b. North Shields, Newcastle) is a visual artist living and working in Carlisle. Born into a family of artists, he developed a passion for making at an early age and now works across a range of mediums, particularly clay and drawing. Painting, however, remains central to his practice.
Since 2022, Stuart has been part of the Prism Arts studio in Carlisle, where he has developed a confident abstract approach that combines simplified forms with a bold exploration of light and colour.
About the work
Stuart’s paintings reimagine natural landscapes and architectural spaces as dreamlike environments. Working from photographs taken during his travels and everyday encounters, he builds compositions that balance naturalistic colour palettes with vivid fluorescent accents.
There are subtle echoes of JMW Turner, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Wassily Kandinsky in these expressive spaces, alongside brushwork that can at times suggest Impressionism. At the same time, Stuart’s work is unmistakably his own. It is modern, bold and atmospheric, capturing the beauty of the world as he sees it while amplifying its rhythm, mood and emotional impact.

Light • Shape • Distance is free to attend and open throughout the spring at Brewery Arts. We can’t wait for audiences to experience this exhibition and to celebrate Stuart’s practice beyond the studio.
