Rest Under The Stars is back this August in Carlisle Cathedral, displaying the work of communities throughout Cumbria.
2nd August 2024
The project first began in 2022, and has developed each year, creating a wonderful installation that represents our journeys, communities, voices and locations throughout Cumbria.
This year’s installation is better than ever, as seven awnings – made whilst the experience has been on its Cumbrian Journey – have been displayed in the South Aisle of the Cathedral, inviting you to take a journey of your own as you make your way down to the deckchairs, an original element of the project created in 2022. There are also three new soundscapes to enjoy whilst you rest under our starry ceiling, representing the regions of Carlisle, the Eden Valley and West Cumberland.

The installation has visited St Lawrence’s, Crosby Ravensworth, St Lawrence’s Church, Appleby-in-Westmorland, St Stephen’s Church, Kirkby Stephen, St Mary’s, Kirkby Lonsdale, St Bees Priory Church and St Mary’s and St Michael’s, Egremont, St Michael’s Church, Workington, St John’s Workington, St Mary’s Westfield and St Andrew’s Church Thursby, with Prism Arts hosting creative workshops in each area to create the awnings and new soundscapes. We would like to thank every community for hosting and engaging with the project and workshops.
Rest Under The Stars can be visited every day at Carlisle Cathedral from 10am – 12.15pm and 1pm – 3.30pm.
Be inspired by your experience of Rest Under The Stars to create your own piece of poetry or art at the ‘creative station’ in the Cathedral and enter this into our summer competition. There are three categories for the competition: primary school aged category, secondary school aged category, 18+ category. Entry to the competition is free, though donations are always welcomed.
